Gem Meyer has always loved radio. He grew up listening to the radio every chance he could, pretending he was on the radio playing the hits. Following college, where he majored in broadcast journalism, he worked at several Iowa stations before moving to Texas and then Washington, DC.
Genuine fell in love with the Outer Banks when he first visited and stayed in one of the original Frank Stick Southern Shores Flat Top Homes. He vowed he would live on the OBX one day.
Growing tired of the hassles of DC, Gem, who by then had married, convinced his wife, Shelley, to give up their careers and embark on an OBX journey. They opened several successful gift boutiques in Nags Head, Duck and Corolla which they operated for 15 years. Their daughter, Hannah, who was born on the Outer Banks, continually reminds her parents that she’s a “local” and they aren’t.
While operating their stores, Gem kept his fingers in Outer Banks radio working at nearly every station on the banks over the past 30 years…WNHW, Dixie 105.7, WVOD, WCXL, WZPR, 96.7 The Coast, and now 98.1 The OBX.
Today, Gem is excited to help build a new radio station: 98.1 The OBX. It’s been a dream of his to be on the ground floor of starting a radio station that’s live and local.
98.1 The OBX is not your usual radio station: You’ll hear curated music from international, national, regional, and local artists and bands. No musical genre is off limits. And we’ll keep you up-to-date on the latest OBX happenings. If it’s important and happening on the Outer Banks you’ll hear about it first on 98.1 The OBX.
And yes, Gem is his real name. When you see him, ask him how that came about.
